The Japanese Lingual Orthodontics association was founded in 1998 and is about to be 40 years old. The number of new members is increasing every year, and now the number of members is close to 800. And in recent years, the number of new members has increased compared to previous years.
Globally, the share of lingual orthodontics is on the decline, and most orthodontic companies in the United States are withdrawing from tongual orthodontics. The improvement in the quality of treatment with mouthpiece-type orthodontic treatment devices and the expansion of its share can also be said to be a major reason. It is clear that the fact that the orthodontic device cannot be seen from others is a great advantage for patients.
Then, why couldn’t lingual orthodontic treatment flourish? I think there are various reasons, but I think the biggest reason is the pronunciation in English. There are many pronunciation disorders caused by lingual correction devices. In the case of Japanese, it is said that you will usually get used to it in 1-2 weeks, but how about in English? When I was in junior high school, I think I remember being told to put my tongue on my front teeth or bite my tongue with my front teeth in English pronunciation class. In the case of English, there are many sounds that put the tongue on the tongue side of the front teeth when pronouncing. Therefore, the pronunciation disorder in English is not comparable to Japanese. I think this is the main reason why tongue correction is shunned in English-speaking countries. Currently, the countries where lingual orthodontic treatment continues are always non-English speaking countries such as Japan, Korea, France, and Italy. Paradoxically, it can be said that there is still a demand for tongue correction in non-English-speaking countries.
In the future, the quality of the mouthpiece orthodontic device will increase. However, in the current situation, there are still some parts that do not reach bracket treatment. Slingual orthodontic treatment is considered to be effective as a means of providing more reliable treatment.
To do so, it is necessary to spread “sungual orthodontic treatment that can be cured with certainty”. In addition to academic conferences, the Japanese Lingual Orthodontics association has a place to learn. For those who want to start tongue side correction, the basic typodont course, for those who want to learn the lab work necessary for tongue side correction, the setup seminar, and for those who want to learn the hygiene work unique to lingual side correction, the codental seminar and that We are holding seminars divided into different learnings. In addition, at the academic conference, we do not only focus on tongue correction, but also capture the entire orthodontic treatment and try to deliver substantial content so that higher-level treatment can be done. By learning lingual correction, you will be able to learn more about oriental labial orthodontic treatment and return to mouthpiece-type orthodontic treatment, which has a similar reaction to the effect of corrective power.
The increase in the number of members in recent years is due to young orthodontists. By learning lingual correction, you should be able to improve your skills in all orthodontic treatment.
By all means, I would like young orthodontists to knock on the door of tongue orthodontics to improve the level of the entire orthodontic treatment.
